Underwater welding catches your attention for a reason. It combines skill, focus, teamwork, and the challenge of working below the surface.
At DIT, underwater welding is part of the Commercial Diver program. You first build a foundation in diving and safety, then train in topside and wet welding while learning many other skills used in the field.
You don’t need previous welding or diving experience. You do need to be ready to swim, learn, and take on physical work.

Practice the techniques, tools, and safety procedures used in topside and wet welding.
Seattle’s Lake Union and nearby waters offer practical training conditions.
DIT helps students prepare for interviews, connect with employers, and find opportunities after training.
DIT does not offer a separate underwater welding program. Its seven-month Commercial Diver program includes underwater welding training alongside the diving, safety, and technical skills that support it.
Train in surface-supplied commercial diving, then put your skills to work in topside and wet welding instruction. You’ll also experience other parts of the field, from rigging to salvage and deep dives.
Certification eligibility depends on meeting the requirements of each certifying authority.
Welding underwater begins with being a capable commercial diver. DIT teaches the safety, equipment, and teamwork behind the task, then lets you practice the welding skills in its broader program.
Before working with tools underwater, learn the equipment, communication, safety practices, and crew roles that support a commercial dive.
Start in the welding shop with topside techniques and the tools you’ll use before moving to underwater practice.
DIT’s welding module focuses on wet welding. You’ll practice making underwater welds and have an opportunity to demonstrate what you’ve learned.
Practice underwater burning in Lake Union while rotating through diving, tending, and rigging roles with your team.

Explore projects that may involve subsea construction, maintenance, welding, and burning.
See how divers work around bridges, dams, piers, vessels, and other infrastructure.
DIT helps you prepare for the next step. Career services includes résumé help, mock interviews, job listings, and visits from inland and offshore recruiters.
Financial aid is available to those who qualify. DIT’s team can help you explore grants, loans, scholarships, and eligible military education benefits, then talk through options for your situation.
Aid and benefits depend on individual eligibility; funding is not guaranteed.
